Answers to my EQs

1.What are the difficulties in mobility
 faced by the elderly.
- Elderly have a hard time getting from place to place as their legs aren't as strong as they used to be.

2.What are some of the things that already help the elderly and are there any flaws in them?
-The walker
Pros: It helps the elderly move about. It has 4 legs and thus provides more balance and support. It is relatively light.
Cons: It has 4 legs so it makes it hard to carry around and hard to bring into narrow spaces. This also makes it hard for the elderly to sit down.

3.How can we help the elderly and make their lives easier?
-We design a slimmer and bendable walker that does not restrict much movement.

Edited EQs

My 3 chosen EQs:
1.What are the difficulties in mobility
 faced by the elderly.
-I ranked this as the most important as we have to know what problems the elderly are facing
before we can do something about the problem.

2.What are some of the things that already help the elderly and are there any flaws in them?
-This is the second most important as if there is a flaw in something that helps the elderly,
maybe we could improve the product and thus make the elderly's lives EVEN easier.

3.How can we help the elderly and make their lives easier?
-First, we find out what is bothering(or making things difficult)for the elderly. Then we focus on
those problems and think of solutions to make life easier for the elderly.

ADMT - Observation3 and 4

Observation 3: Sometimes pathways leading to entrances are designed to make the place look nicer and all but those pathways can sometimes be difficult for elderly to walk on eg. this pathway has gaps and plants are sticking out along it. There are also no railings and thus if an elderly trips over the plants, there is nothing for him/her to grab on to and the elderly may get injured.

Observation 4: Pathways are made of a rough material which is good as it will have a lot of friction and may prevent the elderly from slipping.

ADMT - Observation2

Observation 2: Some doors
of exits or doors leading to staircases or car parks
are very heavy and would probably
be too heavy for an elderly to push it open.

ADMT - Observation1

Observation 1: Some staircases have no railing for elderly to hold on to which would make it difficult for some elderly who are weak. Also, if an elderly happens to trip, a railing would come n handy as they could grab hold of it and prevent themselves from falling.

Holiday work - Part 1: Understanding the ‘The Elderly Challenge’

  • Explain in your own words, the FOUR key recommendations of the report.
-Good housing for elderly should be made so as to make Singapore more elderly friendly and a good home for people of ALL ages.

-All of Singapore would be made accessible to the elderly via barrier free and user friendly transport systems, lifts, walkways and pick-up points.

-Healthcare and eldercare would be efficient, cost-effective and easily accessible to the elderly. The healthcare and eldercare would address a diversity of needs and would ensure that the dignity and the quality of the lives of the elderly are maintained.

-There would be more opportunities for senior citizens. These opportunities would involve them in community groups and other activities. This would make both young and old Singaporeans have a positive attitude towards ageing and seniors.
  • State ONE way that the CAI report is recommending to make our public housing more elderly-friendly
-The CAI recommends helping seniors monetise their housing assets.
  • State TWO ways on how we can ensure that the quality of elderly care here in Singapore is affordable
-The government could top up accounts of the less well-off Singaporeans.

-Elderly should see a family practitioner so that their needs will be “comprehensively and holistically taken care of”
  • After reading the CAI report, what do you are the THREE things that you can do, as an SST student, to help overcome these elderly challenges
-We should spend more time with our grandparents/ elders so as to strengthen the bonds between generations in our family.

-We can help care for our own grandparents instead of totally leaving that responsibility to our parents.

-If we are outside and we see and elderly that may need assistance, we could help them out.

-Instead of using petroleum, we could use Bio fuels or Hydrogen.

-We could use solar panels to power our appliances instead of electricity.

ADMT Lesson 1: Personal Reflection

What is Art, Design, Media and Technology (ADMT) to you?
It is a way of expressing ourselves.

Why is ADMT important?
It is important as it can give us many job opportunities in the future.

What are the skills that you would want to learn in ADMT?
I would want to learn to be better at sketching.

Sketch how the world would look like without art, design, media and technology. Describe briefly your sketch. [Take a picture of your sketch and post it on your personal blog]
